rsmse 2026 – Residual Stress in Materials Science and Engineering 2026 symposium

Topics of the Symposium

The symposium will spotlight cutting-edge research and industrial applications addressing residual stresses in materials and processes. We invite contributions that span from fundamental theory and modelling, through advanced manufacturing and characterisation, to real-world implications in service. Our aim is to foster exchange across experimental, computational and applied domains, and to connect academia with industry. Contributions in any of the listed topic-areas — and ideally bridging multiple ones — are highly welcome.

Formation of residual stress – theory and application
Addresses the theoretical foundations and practical mechanisms behind the generation of residual stresses in various materials systems.

High-throughput characterization
Presents automated and data-driven approaches to efficiently assess residual stress in large sample sets or complex materials systems.

Impacts of residual stress in applications
Explores how residual stresses influence the performance, durability, and failure behavior of materials and components in real-world applications.

Lab scale characterization
Covers experimental techniques and analytical methods for measuring and evaluating residual stresses in laboratory environments.

Manufacturing methods
Examines how different manufacturing routes affect the development and distribution of residual stresses in materials.

Reliability of stress measurements
Discusses the accuracy, uncertainty, and reproducibility of residual stress measurements across different techniques.

Residual stress in additive manufacturing
Focuses on the origin, evolution, and control of residual stresses during additive manufacturing processes.

Synchrotron and neutron diffraction
Highlights advanced diffraction-based approaches for non-destructive residual stress analysis at different length scales.
