Architectured materials nowadays offer a wide range of advanced macroscopic functionalities enabled by their local (micro)structuring: tailored mechanical behavior laws, enhanced mechanical strength, custom friction laws, (re-)programmable morphological changes, and sensitivity to environmental factors (e.g., humidity, light, magnetic, and thermal stimuli).

These materials are studied through new approaches, often at the interface between physics and mechanics. These approaches require several questions of equal importance to be tackled:

(i) The optimal conception of architectures, which requires a determination of the appropriate local structures (geometric or physicochemical, in volume or surface) to impart the resulting materials with specific macroscopic properties,

(ii) The identification of elementary local mechanisms, potentially inspired by nature,

(iii) The manufacturing constraints, that are key to the successful preparation of such materials and to the stability of the expected properties.

(iv) The experimental validation of such systems, with the need for revisiting the characterization techniques to allow assessments of the behavior of the architectured materials.

The aim of this workshop is to foster discussions around optimization methods and architectures that enable the creation of custom functional materials. The design approaches discussed (theoretical, numerical, and experimental) may be illustrated by examples of multifunctional, programmable materials and/or materials responsive to non-mechanical stimuli. The question of wave propagation in metamaterials goes beyond the scope of this workshop and will not be treated here.
