The objectives and tasks foreseen for the internship are:

  • Bibliographic study :  Review of the literature on models of mechanical behaviour of grain boundaries and experimental characterization of oligo-crystalline FCC materials;
  • Experimental methodology : Development and validation of an experimental methodology to characterize austenitic stainless steel oligo-crystals tensile samples:
    • Material : definition of heat treatment to trigger grain growth up the desired size, characterization of the microstructure ; machining tensile samples;
    • Test  :  deposition  of  speckle  pattern  on  the  samples  to  perform  digital  image correlation ; in-situ SEM tensile test at 20°C and 300°C;
  • Experimental characterization : Assessment of the effect of grain boundary type / orientations on tensile curves and local deformation fields;
  • Numerical simulations: Finite element simulations of the tensile tests with microstructure / geometry coming from experiments, assessment of the effect of grain boundaries on global and local fields, evaluation of grain boundaries models.
